Worry-free Tooth Extractions
We believe that it is important to preserve your natural teeth whenever possible. But there are situations when extracting a tooth is necessary to ensure your oral health. It may be the case that a tooth is so severely decayed or damaged by advanced periodontal disease that there simply is no alternative.
Other Reasons for Tooth Extraction
Aside from those more severe cases, though, there are a number of good reasons why a Westchester dental extraction may be necessary:
- Correct Alignment Issues – A tooth may need to be removed because it is improperly positioned and affecting surrounding teeth.
- Preparation for Orthodontic Treatment – Young children may need to have several of their first teeth extracted to allow for proper development of their permanent teeth. In this case we provide space maintainers so that proper alignment of emerging teeth is assured.
- Impacted Wisdom Teeth – This is a common reason for tooth extraction in adults. Wisdom Teeth are the last to erupt and, in many cases, the wisdom teeth become impacted (stuck in the gum) because there is simply no room for them to emerge normally. This can cause pain due to crowding of surrounding teeth. There is also a greater risk for developing periodontal disease as bacteria has a chance to develop in the crevices between overcrowded teeth.
- Preparation for Dentures – A patient who is receiving partial or complete dentures may need to have several or all teeth removed.
While there are many reasons why tooth extraction may be necessary, you should remember that removing a tooth can have a major impact on your oral health. It can lead to problems like difficulty chewing and speaking properly. When a tooth is missing, your other teeth may shift out of proper alignment. Improper tooth alignment can in turn lead to serious issues like TMJ and jaw deterioration.
